Loom free plan limits

Loom’s free plan is called Starter. These limits come from Loom’s pricing page and help center in October 2026.

The recording timer counts down from 5:00 and stops the recording at zero. Comments, emoji reactions and viewer insights are included.

Loom’s pages describe team size in two ways. The Starter plan FAQ says a workspace linked to Atlassian is limited to 10 users, and that a workspace can have up to 50 Creator Lite members. If your company already uses Jira or Confluence, plan around the 10-user limit. The Business + AI trial FAQ also gives Starter as 10 users.

What happens when you hit the 25 video limit

Loom’s help center says that once you reach 25 videos you “won’t be able to create new recordings.” Your existing videos stay, and Loom says it won’t delete them. To record again you either delete videos to get back under 25 or upgrade to a paid plan.

Archiving does not free up space
Archived videos still count toward the 25. If you are near the limit, download is not an option on Starter either, so decide which videos you can delete before you record something important.

Can you download Loom videos for free?

No. Loom’s help center says admins and creators on the Starter plan cannot download videos, and viewers on Starter cannot either. Downloads start on Business, where admins and creators can download. Creator Lite members cannot download on any plan. If you need to keep a copy of a recording, this is the limit most likely to matter. Viewers can still watch your videos by link, so sharing works fine; it is keeping your own copy that needs a paid plan.

Does Loom have a free trial?

Yes. Every new workspace can try Business + AI free for 14 days. You get the Business features (unlimited videos, unlimited recording length, downloads) plus Loom AI, such as summaries, chapters and filler word removal. Loom says you won’t be charged during the trial.

  1. If a card is on file

The workspace stays on Business + AI and you are charged when the trial ends.

  2. If no card is on file

The workspace drops to the free Starter plan. You keep your videos, but you cannot record new ones until you are under 25 videos or you upgrade. Trim and stitch editing go away, and new recordings are capped at 5 minutes again.

  3. If you have more than 10 users

Without a payment method you have 14 days to reduce to 10 or fewer users, or the account is deactivated.

Who the free Loom plan suits

  • People sending a few short updates, bug reports or quick walk-throughs that fit in 5 minutes.
  • Anyone trying Loom before a team buys it.
  • Teams that mostly record meetings, since meeting recordings have no length limit.

It is a poor fit for tutorials, demos or training longer than 5 minutes, for anyone who records more than 25 videos and wants to keep them, and for anyone who needs the video file. For what the paid plans cost, see Loom pricing.

Here is how the limits play out for one person. Say you send three short updates a week. You reach 25 videos in about two months, and from then on every new video means deleting an old one. If a teammate asks for the file, you cannot download it to send.

How to make the most of the free Loom plan

  • Write three or four bullet points before you hit record, so you finish inside 5 minutes.
  • Split long topics into two short videos, but remember each one counts toward the 25.
  • Delete test takes and old updates often. Archiving them does not help, because archived videos still count.
  • Use screenshots for anything that does not need narration. They are unlimited and do not count toward the 25.
  • Record meetings through Loom if you need longer recordings, since meeting recordings have no length limit.

Is Loom free for students and teachers?

Not anymore. Loom’s help center says the old free education plan is closed to new applicants. Verified teachers, professors and students (16 or older) at accredited schools now get a discount instead: up to 50% off for general academic use and up to 75% off for classroom use. You apply with your school email address. Verified accounts get unlimited recording length and HD recording. Anyone can still use the regular free Starter plan.

Free alternatives to Loom

If the free plan limits get in the way, these tools have free options. Every limit comes from the vendor’s own pricing page (checked Oct 2026).
