Why people look for a Loom alternative
Loom works well, but a few things push teams to look around. Most of them come down to the free plan limits and how the price grows with the team.
- Per-seat pricing. Business is $18 per user a month and Business + AI is $24 per user a month on monthly billing. Every Creator or Admin is a paid seat, so the bill grows with every person who records (checked Oct 2026).
- Free plan limits. Starter allows 25 videos per person and 5 minutes per recording, at up to 720p. Archived videos count toward the 25.
- No downloads on the free plan. Loom’s help center says admins and creators on Starter cannot download videos. Downloading starts on Business.
- AI costs extra. Summaries, chapters and filler word removal sit in the Business + AI plan, $6 more per user a month than Business at monthly prices.
- Atlassian ownership. Atlassian completed its purchase of Loom in November 2023. Loom is now sold on atlassian.com too, and workspaces linked to Atlassian are capped at 10 users on the free plan.
For the full price breakdown, see our Loom pricing guide. If you only want to know what the free plan covers, read Is Loom free?.
How to choose a Loom alternative
Start with the job, then check the limits that would hurt you first.
- What you send. Quick async updates need a share link the moment you stop. Product demos and tutorials need editing. Process docs might be better as a written guide than a video.
- Who records. If ten people record now and then, per-seat pricing adds up fast. Check whether viewers and light users are free.
- Free plan limits. Look at recording length, number of videos, resolution and whether you can download your own files.
- Your computer. Some tools are Mac only. Browser-based recorders work on Windows, Mac and Chromebook.
- Commercial use. Some free plans are for personal use only, so read the plan before you record client work.
The best Loom alternatives in 2026
Each price below comes from the vendor’s own pricing page, checked in October 2026. Prices change, so confirm before you buy.
- Cap: best open source Loom alternative
Cap calls itself “the open source alternative to Loom” and runs on Mac, Windows and Linux, plus a Chrome extension. Instant Mode puts a share link on your clipboard when you stop. The free plan is for personal use, with cloud share links up to 5 minutes. Cap Pro is $12 per user a month, or $8.16 billed annually, with unlimited share links and AI titles, summaries and chapters. You can also self-host it.
- Tella: best for polished recordings and tutorials
Tella records screen, camera, mic and system audio on Mac, Windows or in the browser, then lets you edit with AI and export in up to 4K. Pro starts at $13 per user a month billed annually and Premium at $19. Every account starts with a 7-day free trial of Pro, no card needed.
- Zight: best for screenshots and short videos together
Zight mixes screen recording, screenshots and GIFs. The free Share plan allows 5-minute recordings at up to 720p for one user. Create is $9.95 per user a month and Collaborate is $12, both billed annually.
- Vidyard: best for sales teams
Vidyard is built around prospecting videos, CRM integrations and viewer analytics. The free plan allows 5 recorded videos a month, up to 30 minutes each. Starter is $59 per seat a month billed annually, or $89 monthly. Teams and Enterprise are custom priced.
- Screen Studio: best for good-looking demos on a Mac
Screen Studio zooms in on your clicks automatically and exports MP4 up to 4K at 60 fps. Share links support 1080p for videos up to 30 minutes. It only runs on macOS (13.1 or later recommended). It is $29 a month, or $9 a month on the yearly plan.
- OBS Studio: best free option with no limits
OBS Studio is free, open source software for recording and live streaming on Windows, Mac and Linux. There are no plan limits, but there are also no share links: you record a file and upload it somewhere yourself. It takes some setup.
- Scribe or Guidde: best when you need a written guide
If the video is really a how-to, a step-by-step guide may serve readers better. Scribe turns your clicks into a guide with text and annotated screenshots and has a free browser plan; Pro Personal is $25 per seat a month billed yearly. Guidde makes short how-to videos and has a free plan; Pro is $19 per creator a month billed annually or $29 monthly. See Scribe vs Loom.
- Clipfold (ours): launching soon
Clipfold is the tool we are building, so weigh this one accordingly. It is a browser screen recorder (website and Chrome extension) where one recording can become a share link, a clickable demo or an onboarding page. Pricing is per workspace with unlimited members, so recording more people does not raise the bill. It is not available yet; the waitlist is open.

Free Loom alternatives
If you want to spend nothing, OBS Studio has no recording limits but no share links. Cap’s free plan records locally with no time limit and gives 5-minute cloud links, but it is for personal use only. Zight’s free plan matches Loom closely: 5-minute recordings at 720p. Vidyard’s free plan allows longer videos (up to 30 minutes) but only 5 a month.
You may not need an app at all. Your computer already has a recorder: see how to screen record on a Mac and how to screen record on Windows.
Loom alternatives for Mac
Screen Studio is the Mac-only pick for demos that look edited without editing. Cap, Tella and OBS Studio all have Mac apps too. Cap needs macOS 13.1 or newer and runs on Apple silicon and Intel. A browser-based recorder works on any Mac without an install.
Where Clipfold fits
We are building Clipfold for teams that record often and share widely. Plans are per workspace, not per seat: Surfer is $19.99 a month for the whole workspace with 1080p, 10 recording hours a month and AI titles, summaries and chapters included. The free Drifter plan keeps 125 minutes of recordings at 720p, with downloads included. Clipfold is launching soon, and waitlist members get a founding price locked in for life. If you need something today, pick from the list above.
